Our Rector

The Rev. Dr. Moni McIntyre, Rector

Dr. McIntyre was born on February 12, 1948 to Cathryn("Kittye")McIntyre and Angus James McIntyre in Detroit Michigan.

Moni attended Catholic grade and high schools before entering the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) in Monroe Michigan, a call she had felt since the 4th grade. By the 8th grade she had felt the call to join the priesthood which was thought to be impossible in the Roman Catholic Church. Moni earned Bachelor degrees in English and Theology, two Master's Degrees in English and Religious Studies, respectively, a Master of Divinity, and a Ph.D in Theology. She taught Religion and English in Detroit for 11 years.

In 1979, she enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve for two years. She was commissioned an Ensign in 1981, and currently holds the rank of Captain (0-6). She retired from the Navy in 2008 after 29 years of service. Dr. McIntyre held command of two Naval units, Ethics Consultant to the Naval Surgeon General, and Special Investigator to the Surgeon General. She is also an adjunct professor at the Uniformed Services University. Upon completing her Doctorate at St. Michael's College in Toronto, OH, Canada, she came to Pittsburgh and began teaching in Duquesne University's Theology Department where she received tenure in 1997.

Although she never felt called to leave the IHM, Moni's call to ordained ministry had to be answered. She was released from her IHM vows in 1998 and was received into the Episcopal Church the next month at Calvary Episcopal Church in Pittsburgh, her home parish. She was ordained Deacon at Calvary in June of 2000, and was assigned to the Church of the Holy Cross as Assistant to the Rector, the Reverend Jerome Burns. In December 2000, she was ordained Priest at Holy Cross.

Because of her ordination, Duquesne University removed her from the Theology Department and reassigned her to the Graduate Center of Social and Public Policy in January 2001 where she currently holds the rank of Assistant Professor. When Fr. Burns left Holy Cross to accept another call, the people of Holy Cross called Moni to be the Priest in Charge. Her impact as Priest in Charge was so favorable and positively received by the congregation, that at the 2005 Annual Parish Meeting, the congregation enthusiastically asked the Vestry to call Moni as Rector and the Vestry unanimously voted to extend the call, which she accepted.

On Saturday September 17, 2005, before a packed Holy Cross sanctuary of congregants and clergy from all over the Diocese of Pittsburgh as well as local Homewood-Brushton churches and with Moni's IHM sisters also in attendance, The Right Reverend Robert Duncan, Bishop of Pittsburgh instituted Moni McIntyre as the Eighth Rector of the Church of the Holy Cross. She is the first woman to assume the Holy Cross pulpit.
